Green Buildings: should the onus fall on developers and the public

Tuesday 6th October 2020

by Isabella Cheng

Brisbane City Council’s latest solution to the climate crisis: an incentive to develop sustainable buildings. These climate-sensitive design practices may be the future but at what cost? What climate-burden are these green buildings carrying and are they damaging to the public purse?

In September 2020, the Brisbane City Council introduced a new 50 per cent rebate on infrastructure charges for new residential and commercial buildings that were green and energy-efficient. These sustainable buildings are self-sufficient, orientated to save energy and reduce costs; surrounded by green facades, green rooftops, and green walls, which aim to combat the rise in emissions and work with Brisbane’s subtropical climate.
